Live Nativity & Free BBQ at Robertson-Wesley United Church
Robertson-Wesley United Church invites the whole community to our Live Nativity Scene this Christmas. Young and old alike will have an opportunity to interact with the nativity characters and even become some of the characters if desired (bring along your cameras for photos) with Christmas music in the background. There will be a fire to cozy up to while listening to stories and roasting marshmallows and enjoy free smokies and hot chocolate!
This all-age event is on Saturday December 16th from 4-5:30 pm on the front lawn of the church (10209-123 Street). Stop by with your family, friends and neighbours for a picture with Baby Jesus.
There is no admission charge, but the church will be accepting donations of mittens, gloves, socks, toiletries or non-perishable food for the Bissell Centre.
The Multicultural Round Dance – Honoring Reconciliation In Treaty-Six Territory. The Round Dance will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Northlands Coliseum. Organizing partners for the event includes: Creating Hope Society, Somali Canadian Women and Children Association, The Candora Society of Edmonton, and Edmonton Northlands. The Round Dance will be part of Edmonton Northlands farewell weekend at Northlands Coliseum. Please see the attached invitation for more details.
You might ask how an event of this nature came together. It all started about three weeks ago as a search for a venue for a community Round Dance that Candora wanted to hold in North East Edmonton on New Year’s Eve. Challenges around securing a space for the same led the planning group to a new dream, and much larger vision for the Round Dance. The group dared to imagine a celebration that was:
Such a dream brought to mind a venue that has been an integral part of such gatherings…the Northlands Coliseum.
We shared the dream with a number of Treaty 6 Chiefs and an Elder. With their encouragement, we approached the leadership of Edmonton Northlands who embraced the dream and provided a new opportunity. While Edmonton Northlands could not host the event on December 31st, they offered us with the opportunity to hold the Round Dance as part of their farewell weekend on December 15th to 17th, 2017. While we are fully aware of the short time to pull together the event, we also realized that we had the opportunity to bring the dream to reality. An opportunity to bring together all people throughout Treaty – Six Territory. An opportunity to share an Indigenous ceremony and tradition welcoming all. An opportunity to be intentional about learning to live in a new way as a community; honoring the journey of reconciliation.
We invite you to experience this opportunity and to become a part of this celebration. To help you plan for the day, the agenda is as follows:
4:00 pm – Pipe Ceremony and Feast (Halal)
5:00 pm – Welcome and Introductions
5:30 pm – Round Dance begins

An afternoon of quiet reflection and some sharing and rest to honour those who are in for the long haul of caring for someone with little ability to care for themselves. This is also a time to honour the feelings that come with selfless giving and compassion; a time to be with others who understand the wave of emotions that are often mixed with sorrow and joy. A time to be spiritually embraced and uplifted for the continuing journey. Facilitator Helen Gledhow is a certified grief counsellor and former pastoral associate of a large parish where she served in the Pastoral Care ministry and grief support. She has developed and facilitated day and evening programs to help honour the feelings of loss at Christmas and support for the often weary journey of care giving.
