Toronto: Canada’s largest Protestant denomination, The United Church of Canada, will hold its 42nd General Council in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, August 8-14, 2015. The meeting will take place at the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University and the Corner Brook Civic Centre.
The General Council is a national gathering of 356 delegates called commissioners. In addition, close to 200 guests, observers, youth, children, global partners, staff, and volunteers will be present for the week-long gathering.
The General Council meets every three years to elect a new Moderator, to pray and worship together, and to approve new church policies.
For this General Council, the primary focus will be on the report and proposals offered by the Comprehensive Review Task Group based on their consultations and deliberations over the past two-and-a-half years, seeking new ways of being the church.
“This is a time of daunting possibility,” write the Moderator and General Secretary in their letter of welcome to commissioners. “In these changing times, we are called to lift up the things that are most central to our identity as the United Church.”
As always the business coming before this General Council will reflect the church’s deep commitment to concerns of peace and justice, and to God’s call to mend the world. Some proposals come from the Executive of the General Council, while others originate from different parts of the church across the country. In total, approximately 190 proposals for action will be brought before the 42nd General Council. Close to 90 of these relate to the Comprehensive Review report.
All documentation related to the business being dealt with by the 42nd General Council is posted online at www.gc42.ca.
The election of the new Moderator is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, followed by the installation service on Friday, August 14, at 7:30 p.m. (NDT). Vision statements and biographical information about the nominees can be found at www.gc42.ca/moderator-nominees.
